Darren Bent says its criminal Arsenal are heading into Christmas 15th in the Premier League, insisting Mikel Arteta HAS TO GO if their position in the table doesnt improve soon.
The Gunners have suffered a nightmare first half of the campaign, winning just four of their opening 14 league games.
And the boss is feeling the heat with his side going into the festive season in the bottom six.
This week marked one year since Arteta was appointed Arsenal manager – and he’s under huge pressure
Artetas side will take a break from league action on Tuesday evening, no doubt hoping for some rare positivity as they face Manchester City for a place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals – with full commentary LIVE on talKSPORT.
Arsenal fan Bent insists its a game they can win, but admits even lifting the cup this season wouldnt save Artetas job.
And, having already admitted the Gunners are facing a relegation battle, he told the talkSPORT Breakfast he is stunned at just how bad his beloved team has been.
If they can get something from the game it will be a real confidence boost, but in the grand scheme of things he has to focus on the league, because where they are at the moment is not good enough, said the ex-Premier League star.
Arsenal are being touted as relegation candidates after a disastrous first-half of the campaign
You dont expect to see Arsenal down there, you look at the top of the table and Arsenal are nowhere to be seen!
Beating Man City could maybe kickstart the rest of their season… but my only fear is if they do win – which they can do, its a one-off game – then it just paves over a lot of the cracks.
If we then lose to Chelsea on Boxing Day, were back to square one. The league has to be the priority.
Arsenal cannot finish down there; the fact theyre 15th now is criminal! Theyve got to get near that top six, theyve got to.
If Arteta was to win the Carabao Cup but they finish 15th in the Premier League, that is nowhere near good enough and he HAS to go.
Theyre in 15th. Arsenal. FIFTEENTH! It is unacceptable. Brighton finished 15th last season. This is Arsenal Football Club!
Perry Groves believes Mikel Arteta has three games to save his job and the Arsenal manager could be sacked before the end of the year
Bent says theres a mentality issue at the Emirates and also vented his frustration with the Arsenal players, branding them below-average.
And he insisted they will get their manager sacked if they dont pull their socks up soon – with particular focus on captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
I seriously think theres a mentality issue at Arsenal, added Bent. Theres clearly something going on, something is wrong.
You look at the performances of certain players – theyve completely fallen off, theyve just gone.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hasn’t looked the same player since signing his new big-money contract at Arsenal
Aubameyang before he signed this new contract, wow, he was exceptional. I think every football fan wanted him to sign a new contract so he would stay in the Premier League, but hes just completely the opposite now. AND hes the captain!
There are average players in this squad who are underperforming, so theyre below average!
Theyre doing Arteta no favours. Ultimately this bunch of players will get him the sack.
If he puts out a team and they don’t perform for him, the board have got no choice but to move on to someone else.
