I had to drop an otherwise really nice game about the Monkey King, I don’t even remember the name, because they didn’t have any sort of clues on-screen, and there was a lot of controls, it was a tight platformer.
Assassin’s Creed does it right, with the controls that you can turn off if you feel really confident and in later games I believe they also get really un-invasive. If you were away for long, you can easily get yourself up to speed.
Also, some games do have these extensive reminders of where you were and I’m glad they do.
