KUANTAN: The 18 individuals who were detained and remanded in an operation against illegal durian plantations in Raub have been released on police bail.
DAP national legal bureau chairman Ramkarpal Singh (pic) said all of the detainees were released by 11am on Tuesday (July 6).
“It is obvious that the original period of four days that was applied for the said remand was unnecessary as statements were taken from all of the said durian farmers in a short time, and furthermore, they have always been cooperative with the authorities, ” Ramkarpal said in a statement.
Speaking outside the Raub police headquarters, Ramkarpal said they would advise their clients accordingly on the next course of action.
“We welcome their release, and like I said, they will continue cooperating with the authorities if need be. If further statements need to be taken, they will certainly cooperate, ” he said.
On Monday (July 5), the Raub Magistrate’s Court granted a two-day remand for the 18 individuals who were detained by the state Forestry Department on Sunday (July 4).
The department had said that these individuals, suspected of being illegal farmers, were detained for entering a permanent forest reserve area without permission and for making extreme provocations towards the department’s personnel.
