Manchester United captain Harry Maguire hit back at his critics after England’s memorable win over Germany.
The Three Lions progressed to the quarter-finals of the European Championship thanks to Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane, but in defence, England were equally as impressive, standing firm against Germany’s attacks – albeit with a few pulse-raising moments.
After finally returning from the sidelines against the Czech Republic, Maguire started his second consecutive game for England at Wembley on Tuesday evening and he won the Man of the Match award for his excellent performance against Germany.
After the game, though, Maguire hit out against the critics in the Premier League who scrutinise the ‘slightest’ mistakes.

“Its been a tough couple of months for myself, to miss the Europa League final and whether Id be fit for the euros. Full credit to the medical staff at Manchester United and England who got me ready for this game and last,” Maguire told BBC Sport.
“I feel good but I was tired, which is expected. I havent trained that much and played for seven weeks, but Ill improve and get my fitness to where I should be – as a player and a team were feeling good.
“Weve got excellent defenders in this country, sometimes with all the scrutiny in the Premier League and people pick on the slightest things. But we have excellent defenders in this country.
“Clean sheets are nice for defenders, but the most important thing is winning football matches.”
