GEORGE TOWN: A bowl of hot laksa is definitely one of the bucket list items that you have to tick off when visiting Penang.
Famous as a must-have for visitors and tourists heading to the Kek Lok Si Temple, the laksa stall at the foothill of the temple will be closing its doors for now.
Despite the hot sun followed by a slight drizzle, customers queued up patiently in line to take away their favourite delicacy on the last day of business on Tuesday (May 18).
It is learnt that the owner of the stall will be taking a short break and cease operations.
Spotted waiting in line was customer service executive Kala Govindasamy, 51, and her husband Muneswaran Baboo, 49.
We got to know of the stalls closure from a WhatsApp group this morning.
Since both of us are off from work today, we came to tapao laksa for our family.
I have been frequenting this stall for more than 20 years.
The taste is authentic and I still cant get this taste anywhere else, she said.
Ayer Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng, who was buying packets of laksa for his staff, was sad and disappointed that the stall will be closed.
Since my service centre is nearby, I will drop by and have a bowl of warm laksa when I crave for it.
It is a pity for the stall to be closed as laksa is one of the heritage foods in Ayer Itam.
Everyone knows about this laksa stall.
It is one of the must-have foods when visiting Ayer Itam besides visiting the tourist attractions such as Kek Lok Si and Penang Hill.
I hope that the owners will take a short break and continue their business when the situation becomes better, he said.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Ng claimed the stall owners son had defaulted on multiple sets of debts, and the creditors went to the stall to collect debts several times.
He claimed the family decided to cut ties with the eldest son.
Due to the issue, the owner decided to stop business from Tuesday (May 18) until further notice, he added.
