Paul Kent has revealed there were rumours circulating that Newcastle halfback Mitchell Pearce suffered his thumb injury in a street fight — not a training accident.

Mar 9, 2021

Pearce underwent surgery on his thumb in January with the club citing a training incident as the reason for the injury.
However The Daily Telegraph journalist told NRL 360 he had heard an off-field incident may have played a role but Knights coach Adam OBrien categorically denied it.

There was a rumour that the broken thumb that he suffered at training came from a street fight, Kent said.
I asked Adam OBrien about that some weeks back whether it was true or not. He categorically denied it, he said it happened in a tackling drill so you accept that.
O’Brien backs Pearce in weird statement
It comes after OBrien made a bizarre comment in Peaces defence on Tuesday when the club announced the 31-year-old had signed a one-year extension. OBrien said Pearce has never been violent… Yes, he has hurt people close to him but hes never had to front up for being violent.
Kent believes OBrien, with the rumour in mind, was jumping the gun.
I thought it was a pre-emptive comment in respect to that (street fight) in case somebody wanted to dig around, he said.
OBrien also said critics just keep coming at (Pearce).

“He hasn’t learnt why he got sacked”
The Daily Telegraph journalist Paul Crawley called out OBrien for the comment.
Thats an absurd comment for Adam OBrien to make, Crawley told NRL 360.
I know hes trying to protect his player, but you sacked him as captain. You made that call, you made a decision.
He let the team down so youve taken the captaincy off him and now youre saying the critics are coming for him.

Kent also pointed out that Pearces latest off-field incident a texting scandal involving a young female Knights employee which consequently saw his wedding cancelled was his own doing.
The incident was self-inflicted, he said.
Its not like somebody just decided they were going to have a crack at him about the way he played or that he wasnt delivering.
It was a physical incident that occurred that they had to respond to and that was self-generated by Mitchell Pearce.
