Jose Mourinho expressed his frustration with his Tottenham players after their 1-1 draw with Wolves on Sunday, accusing them of lacking ambition.
Tanguy Ndombele opened the scoring inside a minute at Molineux but Spurs failed to build on their early opener and the home side snatched a point with Roman Saiss’ header late on.
Mourinho’s men squandered the chance to go third in the Premier League
Mourinho said: “We are frustrated with the result. We had control of the game, but we had 89 minutes to score more goals and we didn’t.
“It was not just about not scoring goals, it was also about not being dangerous and not being ambitious. For me, that’s the problem.
“Of course, we can go back to a corner. We can say that in Liverpool we should win and we lost with a corner. We can say that here we should win and we drew with a corner.
“We can say against Palace we should win and we drew with a free-kick. I could go even to previous matches.
“But I don’t think is very, very obvious to go in that direction and not to go in other directions. The other direction for me is you score a goal in the first minute, you have 89 minutes to score more goals and we didn’t.”
Asked to explain the fact that his side’s last effort on target came in the 21st minute of the game, Mourinho added: “I don’t want to say much.
“I know the way I prepare the team, I know what I asked of the players, I know what I told them at half-time. I know all that and I don’t want to say much more than that.
“I give some credit to Wolves, of course, because by losing, they put some pressure on us, pressure that we coped quite well with, controlling the game very, very well.
“But we didn’t have that ambition, that desire to go for more.”
Saiss scored a dramatic late equaliser
Wolves’ saviour Saiss, meanwhile, admitted he and his teammates were disappointed to have come away with only a draw.
He said: “I think we can be disappointed because we started the game and we conceded a poor goal. I think we can avoid this kind of goal and after, it’s harder when you are playing this team like Tottenham to come back.
“But I think we controlled the game and even with the draw, I think we deserved more because we created a lot of chances and we scored only one goal.
“But that’s a good mentality. We have to keep it for the next few games and avoid this kind of goal because after, it demands a lot of effort to come back in the game.”
